Routes to gain or upgrade a card

There are three practical routes most tradespeople use to get the correct CSCS card.

Booking the CITB HS&E test and required paperwork

To apply for most CSCS cards you must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment HS&E test at the appropriate level, and sometimes an additional specialist test. Book the HS&E test through CITB online, by phone or via group booking systems for multiple candidates. Keep your Score Report after the test, as it is needed for card applications. You can rebook or cancel online up to 72 hours before the test.

When you book you or your employer will need candidate personal details, and acceptable photo ID on the test day. If you are an employer booking multiple tests, CITB’s Navigator group system is available.

Temporary alternatives employers may accept

If you do not yet have the full qualification employers sometimes accept short-term evidence while you progress to the full card. Typical employer-accepted items include:

Always confirm with the principal contractor before scheduling work. For higher risk or regulated sites, only the permanent card will do.

Practical notes for employers

If you hire tradespeople, check CSCS Smart Check or ask candidates to show My CSCS. For short-term cover accept provisional / temporary evidence only with clear expiry, and always verify HS&E pass reports and qualification enrolments. FAQs

Can I work on site without a CSCS card? You may be able to work on some sites with a provisional or temporary card and the contractor's permission, but many sites will refuse entry without the correct CSCS card. Check the site rules before you travel.

How long does it take to get a CSCS card? Times vary: HS&E test slots can be booked quickly, but NVQ or experienced-worker assessments take longer. Allow several weeks for assessments and application processing, and factor this into your start date planning.

I failed the HS&E test, what now? You can rebook the test. Use CITB revision materials and allow time to resit. Rescheduling or cancellation is possible up to 72 hours before a booked test online.

What should an employer check when a candidate arrives? Verify the card and qualifications using CSCS Smart Check or the My CSCS app, check the HS&E Score Report if the card is still being processed and confirm any provisional card expiry dates. Keep records of checks for audit and safety files.
